DIY Fringed Muscle Tee Tutorial

Happy Thursday!!!!

So today I’m going to be showing you all a very simple DIY fringe top. I originally saw the idea of doing a fringe top from pinterest. I’ve actually been wanting to create my own a while and fortunately the opportunity to do so came about when my boyfriend decided to give me he’s old Ozzy Osborne graphic tee. I immediately figured this would be a great opportunity to try it out for myself. I’m constantly going to various music events, festivals etc, and outside of experiencing the music, we all wanna be comfortable and look great in the process so making your own clothes or accessories help you stand out in the massive crowd. So let’s get started! Here are a list of things your going to need:

  • Old Tee Shirt
  • Marking pencil/marker
  • Tape Measure
  • Sharp Scissors
Ozzy Tee
Before we get started, make sure you are working on a flat surface. There will be moments were you need to make adjustments to the shirt so its important that your working area is flat and helps keep the tee aligned. We’re gonna start by making all the marks on your shirt before doing any cutting. Start by marking the portion to cut off the collar. Measure about half an inch from each side of the collar. Once you’ve measured both side, use your marker/pencil to connect both ends. So in the end you should have a clear marker of where you need to cut around the collar.

Now your going to measure 2′ inches from both sides of the shoulders and 1′ inch from the bottom of the armpit area downward.

Just like with the collar draw a line from the shoulder down to connect with the marks under the armpit. At this point this is what your tee shirt should look like.

Now determine how long you want your fringe to be. I chose to go more than half way to the end and drew a line indicting my stopping point. Because I wanted a lot of fringe, I marked 1/2′ inch indicators from left to right. In total I had a total of 40 marks. I don’t recommend making your strips any smaller than that because you run the risk of having fringe that is too skinny and a higher chance of ripping. Your shirt should be clearly marked with at all points that need to be cut. Now its time to start cutting.

Start by cutting the bottom hem of your tee to create an unfinished hem. All that’s left to do is to start cutting out the individual strips. Remember to keep both the front and back panel of  your shirt together to prevent getting too rigid strips. As you cut your stripes pull on each piece to save you time on stretching each of them after cutting.
Here’s what it looks like once your done!

Lastly cut out the marked sections from the collar and the sleeves.

And this is the final product!!! This top came out AWESOME! I’m very happy with the results. For my first time attempting this is came out better than I thought. Hope this tutorial. If you have any questions feel free to leave me a comment 🙂
